Recycling Legislation Introduced in Congress Supports Educational Outreach
Big Changes Potentially Coming to the Recycling Industry
Recently introduced legislation could make a huge difference in recycling rates throughout the U.S. Two pieces of legislation are calling for increased funding and outreach to improve and expand recycling efforts. If passed, these laws could have a major impact on the waste management industry and the planet. Learn more about these game-changing proposals and how recycling bags can help support these efforts.
RECOVER Act
The Realizing the Economic Opportunities and Values of Expanding Recycling, or RECOVER Act, would provide matching funds in the form of federal grants to state and local municipalities. This money would be intended to improve recycling programs, education efforts, and infrastructure.
RECYCLE Act
The second piece of legislation, the Recycling Enhancements to Collection and Yield through Consumer Learning and Education (RECYCLE) Act aims to improve public education and recycling outreach. The objective is to help people understand how and why to recycle in order to increase recycling rates.
Bipartisan Efforts
Both the RECOVER Act and RECYCLE Act have received bipartisan support. This support helps to stress the importance of recycling and the value both of these pieces of legislation have to offer. These proposals also join another piece of legislation under consideration which would address many of the challenges that face our current recycling system, the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act.
Why Recycling Matters
Recycling is simply the process of repurposing existing materials that have fulfilled their usefulness into new and useful items. So much material that still has value is currently lost to the recycling industry because it ends up in landfills. When recyclable materials like glass, plastic, and metal are tossed into landfills they just take up space. When this happens new resources must be used to create more recyclable materials while landfills edge even closer to reaching capacity.
Recycling can be a challenge for a variety of reasons. We introduced a solution that has delivered results in multi-family dwellings and the benefits of reusable recycling bags prove the increased education can aid in recycling efforts.
