We have you covered if you want to learn more about how the New York Bag Ban began. Bag bans require a lot of work and a change in habits for shoppers and retailers. We decided to look at why there is a bag ban in New York and whether or not New Yorkers are ready.
Details About the Bag Ban in NY
The New York bag ban officially goes into action on March 1, 2020. The law prohibits the use of single-use plastic carry-out bags (with a few exceptions) by anyone required to collect New York State sales tax. Cities in New York and each of the 62 counties in New York have to decide whether or not to charge a 5-cent fee for paper bags. Customers receiving public assistance are exempt from the paper bag fee.
The NY bag ban is intended to reduce the negative impact single-use plastic bags have on communities and the environment. Single-use plastic bags are difficult to recycle, so consumers are left with few options to dispose of these bags safely. Most single-use plastic bags end up in landfills, taking up space and contributing to the landfills’ reaching capacity. Litter is also a common problem resulting from single-use plastic bags.
Concerns About NY Bag Ban
Some retailers have expressed concern about the extent of the New York bag ban and how the measure is being implemented. There is concern that the state has done little to support businesses that implement the ban. Others have expressed concern over the possible paper bag fee for low-income residents. Shoppers on public assistance are exempt from the paper bag fee when it is applicable; however, the fee can be a challenge for low-income shoppers who may not receive any assistance.
Bag bans involve a lot of change. Retailers have to change the items they provide and prepare their staff to implement these changes. Shoppers have to also adjust the make the switch to reusable shopping bags. There are always concerns before a bag ban goes into effect, and while some retailers have expressed concerns, other retailers have successfully made the transition ahead of schedule.
According to the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI), one reusable bag generates 3300 impressions.
