How Do You Make Polypropylene for Reusable Bags?
What is the Process Used to Make Polypropylene Before It’s Fashioned Into a Bag?
We have gotten lots of great questions about polypropylene from our readers and customers in the past. We even answered the question posed by a reader, “What is the difference between woven and non-woven polypropylene bags?
Today we will be answering another question from one of our awesome readers: how do you make polypropylene?
What Is Polypropylene
We write about polypropylene a lot. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a type of plastic that is used in a wide variety of items, but it is perhaps most recognizable as reusable shopping bags.
Polypropylene is useful as a shopping bag because it is durable enough to be used multiple times.
It’s also compact and lightweight, so it’s easy to carry and will not weigh you down.
Brief History of Polypropylene
Polypropylene was first made in 1951 and by 1957 it was being mass-produced since it has so many different commercial applications. Today it is one of the most commonly produced plastics.
How Is It Made
Polypropylene is made in a process that adds propylene monomers to a polymer chain in a process known as polymerization.
The propylene monomers are usually derived from natural gas and petroleum.
There are three ways polypropylene can be manufactured:
- Gas-phase polymerization
- Bulk polymerization
- Slurry polymerization
At this point, depending on the final application the polypropylene goes through a process to create fabric-like sheets that are cut and manufactured into bags.
The Advantages of Polypropylene
Polypropylene is durable and it holds up nicely under regular use. Polypropylene is also recyclable, which means items can be repurposed into new and useful items.
Reusable shopping bags made from polypropylene can typically last for hundreds of uses, and during that time a bag customized with your branding information can easily promote your business.
When the bags have fulfilled their use they can be recycled.
Eco-Friendly Alternative
Some of the biggest advantages of reusable shopping bags made from polypropylene are the eco-friendly traits when compared to disposable shopping bags.
Single-use plastic bags are much more likely to become trash or litter. Neither option is good partly because the nonrenewable resources used to construct the bags are lost to the manufacturing industry. Plastic trash and litter can also be damaging to animals and their habitats.
Polypropylene bags provide all of the convenience of single-use bags while also making excellent promotional products, but without all of the trouble associated with single-use plastic bags.
